WHAT’S GOIN’ ON?! Newsletter

Believe it or not, people, we are halfway through 2016! The days are just flying by! Crazy, crazy, crazy! Sit yourself down with a big ole glass of sweet tea and let me tell you all the things you can do with your church family this month!

First up…you need to know that the church office will be closed on Monday, July 4, because…y’all…hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon and sparklers! National holiday! It’s a thing! Whatever you need to ask Pastor Garry and Miss Sue…do that on Tuesday! OK?

Wednesday, July 6, come to Beechwood Park for some games and pool time. Games and snacks for our 252 kid and our Youth kids will start at 7:00pm and you can jump in the pool at 8:00 until 9:00’ish pm. There is no charge for the fun, unless you would like some additional snack items from the concession stand while swimming. Who’s invited, you ask? Well, 252 kids, Youth group kids, and their families and workers…that sounds like just about everyone to me! Check with Andy & Janine Sutton if you have any questions and they say you kids should bring a friend! Sounds like a good time!

Sunday, July 10 at 6:00pm, will be another Church-wide Pitch-In Fellowship. There will be no Bible study that evening…just some good food and good conversation! Look at it as an opportunity to relax before the craziness of the 4-H fair begins!

And that brings me to Sunday, July 24 at 7:00pm. There will be no Bible study that evening to give you the opportunity to go to the fairgrounds for Vesper Services. Such a nice blessing to be able to worship with our Christian neighbors within our county!

Sunday, July 31 at noon, there will be a 252 Kids Fall Planning Meeting. This meeting is for anyone who is willing to work or be a helper for the weekly 6:00pm Wednesday night 252 kids program.  252 will resume this fall on Wednesday, September 7. This meeting will be a pitch-in lunch immediately following Sunday morning service for those attending and also for their families…so no childcare needed (good thinking, Andy & Janine!) Those attending are asked to bring plenty of food to share. Andy & Janine will provide the drinks, tableware, and answers to any questions you may have…they’re so smart!

Last up, all the usual suspects…The Ladies’ Bible study will continue each Monday in July (except July 4) at 6:00pm. The Adult Bible study meets every Wednesday at 6:30pm. And not to be outdone, the Men’s Bible study will be meeting each Thursday night at 7:30pm. Our teens voted to continue Bible study through the summer and Chris & Molly Blystone were game enough to lead them! AWESOME! They meet at 6:00pm on Wednesdays, but on the 20th and the 27th of this month, they will not be meeting so Chris & Molly can have some vacation time with their littles.

It’s the end of another year. Wow! Where did the time go? Forgot what happened last month, or were unable to make it every Sunday?  Let me remind you what went on in November…


Collections for Operation Christmas Child this year were fabulous!  I talked with Regina today, and she, along with a couple of her elves, delivered 205 shoeboxes to the Christian Church.  Well done!  That is a lot of children who will receive a little bit of love from you and a huge way to show them the love of Christ!  Also, last month, Pastor Garry held another Membership 101 information class with 12 people attending. Miss out? I’m guessing you’ll have another chance…I’ll be sure to keep you informed!  Our church family has been blessed, yet again, by the hiring of Rick Cobb as a part-time Associate Pastor.  He will work Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays each week. Stop by and give him a big ol’ Parke county wave…HEY!!! Last up for last month was our Thanksgiving meal.  It was just amazing wasn’t it?! Right? (OK, confession time…I’m writing this before the actual meal, but it’s food and we’re Baptists!…you know it was good!)


Coming up in December (drum roll, please!) is a Church Council meeting on Sunday, December 7, at 8:30 a.m.  Following the morning worship will be a business meeting (starting to see a pattern with this?).  We’ll be voting on the 2015 budget and nominations, affirming new members and hearing more about the Planning Team Pastor Garry would like to set up. Plan on attending!


Saturday, December 13, from 8:00 a.m. to noon will be a church work day.  How about a Christmas theme? We could sing carols while we work! Or wear red and green! Maybe we could dress as elves!…I’m going to start looking for something festive to wear right now!  Do you really want to miss seeing that?! Just sayin’! See you there!


Sunday, December 21, at 6:00 p.m. will be our Christmas Candlelight Service.  I know Sabrina was going around church asking people if they would be willing to participate.  If she hasn’t gotten to you yet, hunt her down! Personally, I’m hoping Elvis will show up again! Don’t miss this fun and wonderful time with your church family, quirks and all! That’s it for 2014! Remember to slow down and focus on all of your blessings! God is just so good! All.

Well, well, well…it’s November!  Only two more months in 2014…where did the time go?!  Not sure what happened last month?  Here’s the recap!  The 252 kids and youth spent a fun evening at Hobson’s Farm, and Ashley Overpeck gave a quick lesson on God’s creation.  What was the largest seed on record again?  I think it was from a plant on the island of Madagascar?…someone remind me!  October 10 was Brent Lacy’s last day as our youth pastor.  He has taken a new position with the National Network of Youth Ministries.  There was a fellowship dinner on the 19th to encourage the Lacy family and to kick off his new position.  Want to know more about his new job or find out how you can support him in this endeavor?  Check out the information table in the church foyer.  Finally, Pastor Garry started another Membership 101 information class.  The class will continue to meet Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:30 a.m. for the next 3 weeks.  Check it out if you want to be in the know!


Sunday, November 2, is the biggest day of the month!  Operation Christmas Child boxes need to be turned in by this date.  Any information you might need about this can be found in the foyer welcome room and there are still some free boxes on the stage in the sanctuary.  Check with Regina Overpeck, Donna Leonard or Sue Spangler if you have any questions.  Same Sunday…November 2 is Family Sunday.  There is NO Jr. Church or Extended Session.  Moms and Dads, be sure to bring your Mary Poppins bags to help keep your little ones occupied!  Still November 2!…there will be a Church Council meeting at 8:30 a.m. because (you guessed it!) there will be a business meeting following the morning service.  Important stuff happening, so don’t miss this!


On Sunday, November 23, we will be having our Thanksgiving Fellowship dinner after the morning service.  Bring all your goodies and yummies and…I love this time of year!  Afterward, let the napping commence!  There will be no 252 or Bible studies that evening, and the church offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 27-28.


Don’t forget about the prayer meeting on Wednesday nights at 6:30 p.m.!  There has been someone to watch the littles in the back, so don’t let that stop you from coming to encourage and be encouraged.  This is a wonderful opportunity for us to really get to know each other, warts and all!  We’d love to see you!…teens included!


(Make a siren noise in your head, please!)  ALERT!!!  Public Service Announcement!  Our Candlelight Christmas Service will be Sunday, December 21.  If you want to participate in this year’s program (and you know you do!), you need to contact Rick Cobb or Sabrina Vincent as soon as possible!  It takes time to put together such amazing talent!  (OK, you can stop your siren.  It was fun, though, wasn’t it?!  I won’t tell!) 😉



Former Youth Pastor

Our former Youth Pastor, Brent Lacy, has accepted a new position with National Network of Youth Ministries, Great Lakes Region. He will be working in Illinois and Indiana. His last day at FBCR was Oct. 19, 2014. Brent and his family will continue to reside in Rockville, and attend FBCR.

What happened in September? Anyone?  Okay, here’s the recap!  Sunday, September 7, was the Picnic in the Park event.  There was some door-to-door prep work the day before, and we had a great turnout!  Picnic news:  I hear there was lots of good food and good fellowship.  As I understand it, Pastor Garry and Gary Overpeck won the Corn Hole Tournament!  Did they get a trophy or at least a picture?  Somebody get back to me on that!  Anyway!  Thanks for your hard work to make the outreach a success!  The following Sunday evening was a church fellowship that included our 252 kids and their families.  Lots of good food (again) and good fellowship (again)!  Am I starting to see a pattern here?!  Food, fellowship…I like it!


On to business…Saturday, October 4, will be a church work day from 8:00 a.m. until noon. It’s time to clean the gutters, cover the plants, close the pool…oh, wait!…that’s my house!  Well, I’m sure there are some fall-ish things that need to be done at church, too.  Here’s an idea…let’s show up and find out what those things might be!  See you there!


On Sunday, October 5, is a church council meeting at 8:30 a.m. All committee leaders need to attend in preparation for the business meeting following the morning service.  Yep, you guessed it!  Same day!  Isn’t that convenient?


Pastor Garry is planning another 4-week Membership Information class for anyone who is interested in church membership. There will be a sign-up sheet on the table in the foyer.  The start date hasn’t been decided on yet, but it will be soon.  If you missed it the first time, don’t miss it the second!  Contact Sue or Pastor Garry if you have any questions.


Okay, I want you to take a deep breath and I don’t want you to panic! Okay? Good?  Good!  Guess what time it is?  It’s time to start thinking about Operation Christmas Child!  I know it’s only the beginning of October, but if we start now, we’re not running around crazy trying to pack the boxes the week before it’s time to turn them in!  Trust me!  You’ll thank me later!  The information sheet and instruction pamphlet are on the hall table.  You need one of these, so pick one up.  You also need a shoebox, so check with Regina Overpeck or Donna Leonard about the best boxes to use.  The countdown has begun…we’ve got about 6 weeks to pack them and get them to church.  Last year we collected around 100 boxes.  What should we aim for this year?  Goal challenge, anyone?  I’ve heard a suggestion of 250 boxes…what do you think, Mission team?  Can we do it?  Let’s bring it, people!  Run, do not walk, to get your boxes ready and to be a part of this opportunity to serve kids from around the world!  Are we ready?  Grab those running shoes, stretch it out and breathe!  Don’t forget to breathe!
